Hey Petr.
How is it possible for you to do so many IM races in such a short time over so many years? How do you mange that pysicially? Most pros do 2 IM a year, you are doing 10-12.....do you never get really tired? What do you train in between these races in your short breaks?

Hi Peter! Congrats on the outstanding performance in Cairns! Had a quick question for you. I picked up triathlon just a few months ago and got a bit of Achilles tendonitis after my first olympic race which I worsened two weeks later at a 70.3 in Pescara (fantastic experience btw - but due to the pain I couldn’t go below 5:30 overall). Would like to do my first IM race in the Canaries or in Nice next year but am trying to figure out how to avoid this injury in the future...any advice? special exercises or equipment you could recommend to avoid this?? Thanks a lot! Best of luck for you next IM in Klagenfurt!!
Hi and thanks! I was lucky enough to never have troubles with achilles tendonitis through my carreer.
You should definitely let it heal fully and then take some steps to prevent it from coming back:
- regular weight training
- reasonable 10% max increase in weekly running mileage
- proper shoes, which are not worn out
- barefoot running, whenever possible
- proper healthy nutrition
- use of compression socks for strenous training sessions and races...
I hope this set of actions will help.
Good luck!
Hi Peter, I heard, you are using special cranks for pedalling developement. Would you plese give me some details? I am your big fan. Johnny
Hi Johnny. I am using Powercranks for most of my training sessions. You can find more info and order them on www.powercranks.com. They are not cheap, but are definitely worth every penny. They help not only your cycling efficiency, but run strenth as well!
Hi Petr, what exactly means Ironman 70,3? Thanks for answer.
This is cumulated mileage of Half Ironman and races with this mark belong to qualifying WTC series for final in Clearwater, Florida (November). It is 1,9km swim - 90km bike - 21,1km run. This series acts mainly as stepping stone from short distance to Ironman triathlon.
Hi Petr. What was your VO2max, resting HR and vital capacity?
I don´t do laboratory testing any more. It used to be around 65 VO2 max, 27 resting HR and as a rower I had 6 litres VC.
What is your favourite unsporsmanlike activity?
Playing with my son and cultural activities with my wife (theatre, dancing,...).
How many hours a day do you train?
It depends of the phase, I am in. It varies between 0 and 6. I am not a big then of century bike rides, 6 hours usually means 3 different 2 hour sessions. Most often it would be 4 hours in 2-3 sessions.
What would be a perfect vacation for you?
All inclusive hotel right on the sandy beach with my family. Own management of flights, accomodation, foods, transfers, bike,... is what I do for the rest of the season!
What is your favourite pre race meal?
Plain rice with raisins, fresh pinneaple and molasses.
I would take gel (Endurosnack from Nutrend) just before the start.
How long do you plan to keep racing professionaly?
Till it still makes me fun and living. I am not planning on leaving any time soon, but injury or some kind of weakness might change that anytime. How about next 10 years:-)?
What is the total number of races, you have finished?
By the end of 2006 it was approximately 46 IM dist, 22 "101" dist, 21 halfIM dist and around 200 short and sprint races since 1989. I will add some 13 IM races, 2 101 races and 4 half IM races in 2007.
What made you to change from rowing to triathlon and when did you start racing IM distance?
Back in 1989 as an active rower, I decided to give a sprint triathlon a try. I loved it! kept rowing till 1994 with occassional short triathlon and went triathlon full time from 1995. My first IM was IM Australia 1999 (6th place).
What are your thoughts during Ironman?
It is not easy to keep full concentration for the whole 8-9 hours. If I do, I am trying to analyze my situation (pace, effort, power, nutrition, hydration, others,...) If the going gets tough, I am thinking of my family (waiting at the finish line or left home).
What is your favourite IM race?
There is something special to almost every race on the circuit. My personal pick would by Ironman South Africa with its unique nature...
I am 17 yrs old and would like to complete an Ironman race. I did no sports so far.
Thet would need a long term approach. You should start with some kind of regular activity first to build basic endurance. After a year or so, you can start to work more specific on tri disciplines and their combination. Just remember, to really enjoy and later excell at Ironman, you would need to work out properly for few more years! As for racing, start with sprint, olympic and half IM races first to figure out transitions, equipment and nutrition...
What is the easiest way to qualify for Kona?
If you are lucky enough, then it would be WTC lottery. Otherwise, you have to apply to qualifiing race early enough (some sell out in few hours) and pick a race, which has climate and profile appropriate for you. More exotic races are more likely to have slot for you, but it is also more expensive to get there.
what is your opinion about doping?
There is no way, doping should be made legal. That would be end of many great sports. We have to make more controls and fight it forever!
What makes you fun most of all?
Happy family. When all 3 of us are jumping on the trampoline in our garden and laughing:-)
